ASME INSPIRE Program Surpasses the 500-School Mark

ASME INSPIRE Program Surpasses the 500-School Mark ASME INSPIRE Program Surpasses the 500-School Mark ASME INSPIRE Program Surpasses the 500-School MarkStudents at Floyd Middle School in Mabletown, Ga., one of more than 550 schools across the United States that are currently using the ASME INSPIRE digital course in their classrooms. Theres no sophomore-year slump for the ASME INSPIRE program, the Societys digital course for middle- and high-school students that aims to ignite interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and its related careers. As of March 31, INSPIRE is now reaching more than 20,000 students in 551 schools across 43 states. The enthusiasm for the program continues to grow in the programs second year of implementation in school systems across the United States, with a 30 percent increase in schools and a nearly 45 percent increase in the total number of students this same time last year. Featuring a unique use of interactive simulations as a le arning tool, INSPIRE puts students in the role of secret agent. To complete their mission, students must learn, and then demonstrate mastery of, a variety of STEM skills including algebra and coding. With well over 600 teachers currently using the modules in their classroom, the program is being integrated into current STEM-related activities and used to amplify the planned classroom curriculum. For example, Dr. Mary Mwangi, the lead teacher at Floyd Middle School in Mableton, Ga., requires that each student write a formal mission report following each of the 16 online challenges to ensure that her students have an accurate understanding of how the INSPIRE missions relate to the other STEM-related activities in her curriculum. Michelle Jennings (center), a science teacher at Brooklyn Science and Engineering Academy, with her students who have completed the ASME INSPIRE course. And Michelle Jennings, a science teacher at Brooklyn Science and Engineering Academy, recently celebrated the graduation of her first several INSPIRE students. According to Jennings, her students loved using INSPIRE, and she is thrilled at the results. In fact, it is now mandatory that all students interested in becoming members of the academys robotics team must first complete the INSPIRE module.Cultivating this enthusiasm for engineering and STEM overall is critical to breaking down the stereotypes and barriers that often inhibit a students ability to see him or herself in these creative and vibrant roles. Indeed, the shortage of graduates prepared to work in STEM-related fields is a monumental problem for Americas future - as is the lack of diversity in the profession. As it stands, just 1 in 10 minorities choose to pursue STEM education and careers. And even though women earn 60 percent of all undergraduate degrees awarded, only 18 percent of undergraduate engineering degrees are held by women.Forward-thinking educators such as Mwangi and Jennings understand the importance of strengthening STEM education in America and using ASME programs like INSPIRE to engage young students who show a budding interest in engineering by building on their natural fascination with our world.ASME INSPIRE is supported through the generosity of the ASME Foundation. Why KKR Is Cooler Than Goldman Sachs, According to Raj RajarWhy KKR Is Cooler Than Goldman Sachs, According to Raj RajarLast Friday, in testimony played during the U.S. v. Rajaratnam insider trading trial in Lower Manhattan, the jury heard accused felon Raj Rajaratnam speculate on why accused informant Rajat Gupta wanted to leave Goldman Sachs to take a position at private equity firm KKR. The following was taken from a wiretapped conversation between Raj Raj and Anil Kumar (who has already pleaded guilty to insder trading) both Raj Raj and Kumar were close buds with Gupta, whom they are discussingRAJARATNAM Goldman is one board right. And hes, you know, hes essentially an observer status, right? Hes not in there, you know, rolling up his sleeves ... And the issue is the perceived conflict of interest.KUMAR But is it really that he was so greedy for the $12 million that KKR has offered him?RAJARATNAM He ran the numbers with me, right, it was about $5 million a year with upside ... My analysis of the situation is hes enamored with Kravis, and I think he wants to be in that circle. Thats a billionaire circle, right? Goldman is like the hundreds of millions circle, right ... And I think here he sees the opportunity to make $100 million over the next five years or 10 years without doing a lot of work.(DealBook Figure in Insider Trading Case Sought to Quit Goldman)

Certification and Certificates in Engineering

Certification and Certificates in Engineering Certification and Certificates in Engineering Certification and Certificates in EngineeringJohn Koehr, Managing Director of Technology and Personnel Certification for the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (owner of ASME.org), says certifications and certificates are vital for employers to determine whether they can do a specific job. Certification is defined as an independent assessment of a persons qualifications and a testing of that. It allows a leveling out of the ways someone can achieve a qualification. A certificate, on the other hand, shows something achieved on the training side. Certifications carry a level of portability for anywhere an employee would perform that job, regardless of where they would go on to work. Certificates, at least for ASME, tend to be without a time limit on their validity while the opposite is true for certifications. The challenge of a certification is you are trying to create an assessment exam thats fair and valid, he says. For us, we have a psychometrician (contracted licensed psychologist) who helps technical experts look at the content and do a detailed analysis of specific jobs or tasks. If someone doesnt pass, theres an appeal process to look at as well. Koehr says certifications vary in applicability and timeliness in mechanical engineering. You look at the area of nuclear power and there havent exactly been a lot of plants built in the last 30 years, he says. Certifications in those areas wont exactly be for everyone. But then you look at certified energy assessment practitioners. When you have standards and guides on compressed air systems and steam systems, then theres potentially more value. Current ASME certification programs include those for resource recovery facility operators, operators of high-capacity fossil fuel-fired plants, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing professionals. Certificate programs include nuclear and engineering management, along w ith others in development. The QRO has the fruchtwein number of certificate holders and is for waste recovery resource operators. Were talking about burning garbage to make power, Koehr says. These plants are coming in all over the place and make sense from energy balance. These are not engineers but technical personnel. The next biggest is GDTP. That focuses on engineers, designers, and other office workers employing computer-aided drafting. This can be a major help, Koehr says. Those who dont have the skills to be specific in their drafting measurements can cost a company a decent amount of money. The last program is QFO, Koehr says. Its a qualification of fossil operators for high-capacity heating and power boilers. There arent many certificate holders but, like many areas, its growing. Eric Butterman is an independent writer. Certifications carry a level of portability for anywhere an employee would perform that job, regardless of where they would go on to work.

What It Means to Be Good at Social Media - The Muse

What It Means to Be Good at Social Media - The MuseWhat It Means to Be Good at Social Media While there are certain indications to suggest that youre social-media savvy- you engage regularly, you know how to use the platforms correctly, and you know theres real value in being there- in reality, theres no real cut and dry or objective way to assess your success. That can be frustrating since youre constantly being told to care about your presence. Yes, seeing follower count constantly on the uptick is one way to decide if youre good. But youre also misleading yourself if youre only grading yourself on that one metric. After all, the whole point of having followers is to have an audience to interact with your message- whether that message is getting people to purchase your life coaching services or one seeking restaurant suggestions for your upcoming trip to France. Im sure we all know someone who has an unbelievable amount of followers, yet rarely gets any responses. To put it mora succinctly If you want to excel at the game, you want to start thinking quality over quantity. And you probably know that already. After all, when is that ever not the case? What you might not know is how to get there or how to know if youre doing it right. Because Im no expert on the topic, I reached out to a couple of folks who are, such as Alex Honeysett, a brand and marketing strategist. She agrees that ...being good at social media has less to do with mastering the platforms and (way) mora to do with using them to have meaningful conversations and create real-life connections with people you want to know and create relationships with. And for the purposes of this piece, I also thought it crucial to chat with decidedly more average users. These are people who arent necessarily aiming to become online influencers. How they view social media strategy or presence is, as expected, more laidback but also full of compelling nuggets of information. Ben, a San Francisco media consultant, whod prefer that I dont use his last name, initially was reluctant to chat with me about his presence, protesting that he wasnt the best part to answer the question based on his numbers. He went on to cite the number of followers he had and which platform he was most active on. Id reached out to him precisely because I value the quality of his posts (not to mention, because of them, Im deeply envious of his baking skills). Although he says that he doesnt really think of himself as being particularly good at social media, Id argue that according to Honeysetts explanation of what constitutes a solid online presence, thats inaccurate. And, in fact, his ideas on what make a person good at social media tell the tale that he is good His content tends to incite a lot of commentary, and people are unarguably engaged. And thats the entire pointIn addition, I reached out to Allison Esposito, founder of Tech Ladies because shes both built up a presence personally and for her business. She inh erently grasps the importance of community and says that she...really looks at engagement more than anything else. I know people are getting value from the community when I see active conversations in the comments. Likes are a little less important but they are a decent at showing which posts are interesting to people... If you dont quite know where to start, Honeysett suggests asking yourself what you want people to know about you and then posting accordingly. Thus, if you want to share industry knowledge and connect with people, know which platforms might work best for this, and then understand what youre hoping to get out of the relationships you create. Knowing this will help focus the conversations you have once the connections are made. You can care about more than one thing, but considering which platform is best for what topic can benefit you in the long run, particularly if you can maintain that focus on quality over quantity. For example, are you interested in landscape ph otography? Seek out people on Instagram and take time to send messages or comment on their posts. Building a voice and upping engagement comes from being real, a factor that Honeysett says is important. She goes on to say that, social media has a way of making our lives seem glossier than they really are and creating a keeping-up-with-the-Jones mentality. Im finding people are much more interested in sharing and commenting on posts that show the full spectrum of life versus show off, look-how-great-I-am posts (which, if were being real, is the majority of whats out there).By getting away from the glossy youll actually stand out, and the point of being online is to be yourself- not blend in with others. And this is, again, where homing in on your voice is key. Bens advice Find your voice and stick to it. If you want to establish yourself as a food blogger, youd better make sure your feed is full of food-related content, because everybody with a phone and an appetite posts pictures of their food at least occasionally.Julia, another person Im linked to on various platforms, says she really values the comments section on Facebook and Instagram. As a freelance writer, she frequently posts articles shes written, but shes also careful to post other things on her page. If a friends post speaks to her, shell post that. If she wants advice on the best way to train a new puppy, shell pose that question to her friends. Engaging with other peoples posts has shown an uptake in the responses to her postings. She saysI dont think too much about my voice, but I guess its there. And even though I dont love the idea of personal branding, I dont think theres any way of escaping it if youre actively online. But before you go on a commenting rampage, The Muses Social Media Manager, Allie Hunt, explains, one of the main objectives is to engage with others. And the genuine way to do that, she says, is to take time to really listen to what people are saying, rather than just jumping in and sharing your content or opinions. So, stop obsessing over numbers if thats where your heads been, and focus on engagement. If you focus on this, the numbers will grow by default. Paying attention to numbers and racking up followers may get you some quick wins- but without the engagement. And without that component, whats the point? If people arent reacting to you, youre not using your platforms effectively. Thats the bottom line.Photo of person on social media courtesy of Sam Edwards/Getty Images.

How to Request a Promotion to Sales Management

How to Request a Promotion to Sales ManagementHow to Request a Promotion to Sales ManagementNot everyone in ausverkauf has an interest in earning their way into a sales manager or sales director position, but many sales representatives aspire to such positions. If you have a desired career path that includes a aufsteigen to management, you need to know not only when to ask for a promotion but how to ask in a way that increases your chances of getting that promotion. Knowing How to Request a Sales Promotion The first thing you need to do may seem obvious but is often overlooked. Asking directly for a promotion when there are no opportunities for advancement can create a stressful situation for you and your manager. However, communicating your interest in a future promotion can let your manager know that you are prepared for advancement if it becomes a possibility. Requesting additional responsibility lets your manager know that you are ready to take on new challenges. A good emplo yer will look to keep their employees motivated and engaged in their job by assigning new tasks, even if a formal promotion is not yet able to be granted. Before you consider asking for a promotion, make sure that either a position opening exists or a newly created position is needed. This will increase your chances of a positive outcome. Preparing for a Sales Promotion When requesting a promotion, you should be prepared to explain why you deserve it. This includes a detailed listing of your accomplishments and the challenges you overcame to complete them successfully. In addition, assure your employer that you feel confident in taking on additional tasks and responsibilities. To determine the likelihood of a positive response to your request, also consider your past performance reviews, paying attention to any ratings or comments that suggest managements readiness to assign you new responsibilities. In sales, the best way to prove yourself is by producing results. Hitting your assigned quota is expected those who consistently exceed their quotas are usually considered for a promotion. Developing Sales Management Skills If you have proven yourself in your current sales position, you should consider learning new skills that will increase your chances of getting promoted. In addition to your selling skills, you will need to possess certain management skills, such as teaching, coaching, and developing a team. Senior leaders are usually reluctant to promote a talented sales representative to a management position if the person has a polarizing personality, is difficult to work with, and is focused solely on their own interests. The best and most successful sales managers and directors blend strong sales skills, with strong rapport, negotiation, trouble-management, and recruiting skills. If you or your superiors feel that you are lacking in any critical managerial skills, hold off on asking for a promotion until you can improve them. If your employer offers additional skills training, make sure you ask to be included in the next training sessions while letting them know that you are interested in earning a promotion. Letting your employer know that you are serious about advancing your career before asking for a promotion will likely put you in a strong position to move to the next level. How to Get the Promotion If you are ready to take on the additional responsibilities of a sales management position and it becomes available, make sure you are well prepared to request the promotion and interview for the positionPrepare for your meeting or interview much like you would when preparing for a large sales presentation. Review the job description to ensure your skills meet the required skills of the position. Also, be ready to explain how your current experience can help you successfully perform the new job.Consider any weaknesses in the sales team that you would manage and how you would overcome them, as well as any improvements that you would make. Be proactive by creating a plan of action that details what you would do and what results your superior can expect. Make your presentation compelling but keep it grounded in reality. You want your employer to get interested and excited about you in this new role.Believe in yourself and communicate confidence during the meeting. How to Handle Illegal or Inappropriate Interview Questions

How to Handle Illegal or Inappropriate Interview Questions How to Handle Illegal or Inappropriate Interview Questions There are many topics which should be off-limits during a job interview. Questions about age, ancestry, citizenship, credit rating, criminal record, disabilities, family status, gender, military discharge, or religion should not be asked directly by an interviewer. While the intent of these questions may be to determine if you are a good fit for the job, it is important to know that only information relevant to your ability to do the job can and should be asked. Interview Questions That Are Illegal Federal and state laws prohibit prospective employers from asking certain questions that are not related to the job they are hiring for.  Employers should not ask about any of the following unless it specifically relates to the job requirements  because to not hire a candidate because of any one of them is discriminatory: RaceColorSexReligionNational originBirthplaceAgeDisabilityMarital/family statusSalary (some locations) Job  requirements based on an employeeรข€™s gender, national origin, religion, or age can be used in very limited circumstances. They are lawful only when an employer can demonstrate that they are bona fide occupational qualifications (BFOQs) that are reasonably necessary to the normal operation of a business.  For example, its acceptable to require the candidate to be a Roman Catholic for a job as director of  the faith  formation for a Catholic parish.   How to Respond When You Are Asked an Illegal Question If you are asked an illegal interview question or the questions begin to follow an illegal trend, you always have the option to end the interview  or refuse to answer the question. It may be uncomfortable to do, but you need to be comfortable working at the company. If the questions you are being asked during the interview are indicative of the companys policies, you may be better off finding out now. Sometimes an interviewer will ask inappropriate questions accidentally, and in that case, you may choose to answer them politely, avoiding the substance of the question but addressing the intent. Heres more information on what interviewees can and cannot be asked and how to respond if you are asked an inappropriate question. Age There are instances where an employer may need to determine an applicants age. The interviewer can ask a young interviewee if he has appropriate working papers. If the job requires that an applicant is of a minimum legal age for the position (i.e. bartender, etc.), the interviewer can ask as a pre-requisite to employment that proof of age be furnished. If the company has a regular retirement age, they are permitted to ask if the applicant is below that age. However, an interviewer cant ask your age directly: How old are you? When did you graduate? What is your date of birth? If faced with these questions you can choose not to answer, or answer with the truthful, if vague, My age is not an issue for my performance in this job. Ancestry There are few questions legal to ask relating to ancestry and race which are pertinent to employment. During an interview, you may legally be asked, How many languages are you fluent in?, or Are you legally eligible to work in the United States? Questions such as Is English your native language?, Are you a U.S. Citizen?, Were your parents born in the U.S.?, What race do you identify yourself as? are illegal for a person to be asked during an employment interview. Faced with questions such as these, you can refuse to answer, stating simply, This question does not affect my ability to perform the job. Credit A prospective employer cannot ask about your financial status or credit rating during an interview. There are limited exceptions to this if you are applying for certain financial and banking positions. Also, employers can check the credit of job applicants  with the candidates permission. Criminal Record During an interview, an interviewer can legally ask about any convicted crimes that relate to the job duties. For example, if you are interviewing for a position that requires handling money or merchandise, you can legally be asked if you have ever been convicted of theft. During an interview, you cannot be asked about arrests without convictions, or involvement in any political demonstrations. You may choose to tell the interviewer simply, There is nothing in my past which would affect my ability to perform the duties of this job. Depending on your state and the type of job for which you are applying, the employer may be able to check your criminal record as part of an employment background check. Disability During an interview, the interviewer may ask questions about your ability to perform specific tasks, such as Are you able to lift safely and carry items weighing up to 30 pounds?, or This position requires standing for the length of your shift, are you able to do that comfortably? or Are you able to sit comfortably for the duration of your shift? Under no circumstances is a prospective employer allowed to ask your height, weight, or any details regarding any physical or mental limitations you may have, except as they directly relate to the job requirements. If you choose to reply, you can state I am confident that I will be able to handle the requirements of this position. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) provides protection for job seekers with disabilities. It is unlawful for an employer to discriminate against a qualified applicant with a disability. The ADA applies to private employers with 15 or more employees, as well as to state and local government employers. Family Status An interviewer can ask questions regarding whether you can meet work schedules, or travel for the position. He can ask about how long you expect to stay at a particular job or with the prospective firm. Whether you anticipate any extended absences can also be asked. An interviewer cant ask your marital status if you have children, what your childcare situation is, or if you intend to have children (or more children). You cannot be asked about your spouses occupation or salary. If you choose to answer a question of this kind, a graceful way to answer is to say that you can perform all the duties that the position entails. Gender In a face to face interview, it is unlikely that an interviewer will not know your gender, but its important that your gender not be taken into account in her assessment of your ability to do the job. You cant be asked your gender during an interview for a position, unless it directly relates to your qualifications for a job, such as an attendant in a gender-restricted restroom or locker room. Military Discharge An interviewer may ask questions relating to the branch of the military in which you served and your attained rank. It is also legal to ask about any education or experience relating to the position to which you are applying. You may not be asked about your type of discharge or about your military records unless it relevant to the job you are applying for. For example, if the position required a security clearance. When you answer these questions, you can indicate that there is nothing in your records that would impair your ability to succeed in the job. Religion During an interview, an interviewer can ask if you can work during the normal hours of operation of the business. An interviewer cannot ask your religious affiliation or holidays that you observe. It is illegal to be asked your place of worship or your beliefs. If you are asked questions of this kind, you may reply that your faith will not interfere with your ability to do the job. Before You File a Claim Before you file  a claim for discrimination, you might want to consider that most discrimination is not deliberate. In many cases, the interviewer may simply be ignorant of the law. Even though the interviewer may have asked an  illegal question, it doesnt necessarily mean that the intent was to discriminate or that a crime has been committed. Filing a Claim If you believe you have been discriminated against by an employer, labor union or employment agency when applying for a job or while on the job because of your race, color, sex, religion, national origin, age, or disability, or believe that you have been discriminated against because of opposing a prohibited practice or participating in an equal employment opportunity matter, you may file a charge of discrimination with the  U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission  (EEOC). To file a charge, contact an attorney who handles labor issues, or  contact  your local EEOC office. How to Demonstrate Your Value to a Prospective Employer

How to Demonstrate Your Value to a Prospective Employer How to Demonstrate Your Value to a Prospective Employer There should be a single thread that is both evident and consistent through your job search. It needs to come out in your rรƒ©sumรƒ©s, cover letters, LinkedIn profile and during interviews. It all boils down to selling yourself, and the question is how do you do that in each document and at each stage of the job search process? You must demonstrate your value. Sounds complicated, right? Youรข€™re probably asking how you can figure out what your value is. And once you do know, how can you possibly show value in words? Here are some doรข€™s and donรข€™ts to help you get it right. Do show what youรข€™re trying to get across. If you constantly write things like, รข€œSandra was sad,รข€ รข€œSandra was mad,รข€ รข€œSandra was excitedรข€ in a creative story youรข€™re writing, not many people will be intrigued to read further. Showing emotions is what makes a story work effectively, and examples are what make it work. So instead of writing that you have great communication skills, think of specific examples from your work history where youรข€™ve demonstrated them. Thatรข€™s what should go in a rรƒ©sumรƒ©, cover letter and on your LinkedIn profile. Donรข€™t tell an employer what your value is รข€" show it with examples. Itรข€™s what any good creative writing teacher will tell you. What does this look like in practice? Donรข€™t use clichรƒ©d phrases such as, รข€œexcellent written and verbal communication skills.รข€ You are simply telling your reader you have those qualities, and anyone can say that. Do make your materials understandable for a wide audience. Ask someone unfamiliar with your job or industry to read your rรƒ©sumรƒ© and cover letter to alert you to places where clarification is needed. Acronyms should be written out, and companies or organizations that are not well known require a concise description. Donรข€™t assume your reader knows your industry or your job. While the person may have written or helped write the job description, he may not have an in-depth understanding of what is required for the job and in your profession in general. Do provide quantitative and qualitative results of your work. This can be difficult for many professions, but you donรข€™t necessarily need metrics to show results. There are ways to show the impact of your work in words. Did you save your boss or colleague time? Did you perform research that eventually led to a publication by a colleague? Donรข€™t lie or exaggerate numbers or statements. Estimates are OK to use, but you should not be inflating your achievements. These fibs are usually instantly recognizable to people who read scores of rรƒ©sumรƒ©s and constantly interview candidates. Saying you oversaw a product launch when you did not is not OK.   Do demonstrate for a potential employer how you can help them do business in a smarter way. If youรข€™ve improved processes in your past jobs, it is likely you can do that for a prospective employer as well. Make sure those examples are in there.Donรข€™t make overconfident claims. If you write in a cover letter or say in an interview that you know the company has made mistakes, and thatรข€™s why a competitor is outpaced them, you may not get very far. Youรข€™re still an outsider, and coming in and being critical right off the bat is not going to help your cause. Even if itรข€™s true, their employees probably donรข€™t want to hear it from you. It just gives a bad impression.Do include awards, honors and recognition. Awards and honors should have their own section rather than be hidden under job descriptions in bullets. If a colleague or client gave you compliments on your work, find a way to use these in your cover letter and/or interview. You can also ask for a recommendation on LinkedIn. Donรข€™t hide things you ought to be proud of, and donรข€™t make your reader dig for the information. You received the award or recognition for a reason. Highlighting these only helps you. While itรข€™s not easy to show your value in writing or verbally, itรข€™s a skill you must learn for your job search and your career. Think about when you meet a new person who interests you professionally. Are you going to tell them, รข€œHi, Iรข€™m Mike. I am a great leader and an excellent communicatorรข€? Yawn. You need to show them what makes you a great leader and an excellent communicator. How are you different from your competition? Why should they want to talk to you instead of another candidate? If you arenรข€™t using examples with impact to demonstrate the benefit you bring to an organization, no one will be inferring it for you, and itรข€™s not likely youรข€™ll get a call for an interview. Do be thoughtful about what youรข€™ve done and what stands out, and show them all youรข€™ve got to offer.

Heres how you can turn your small talk on a plane into a new career

Here's how you can turn your small talk on a plane into a new career Here's how you can turn your small talk on a plane into a new career Hunkering down for a long flight, I adjusted my seat and flashed half-hearted smiles at the strangers awkwardly shuffling into the seats next to me. I wouldรข€™ve never guessed that a few hours later, one of those strangers would be my future boss.I was on vacation, catching one of those convenient and affordable intercontinental European flights to my next holiday destination - career opportunities werenรข€™t necessarily the first thing on my mind. But as luck would have it, I sat next to a chatty business professional on his way home from a meeting in London. The 2-hour plane conversation that changed my lifeAfter exchanging pleasantries and discussing what each of us was doing on a plane headed from London to Austria, we naturally fell into a conversation about the e-commerce industry the businessman was a part of. As a fresh graduate with a Bachelor of Commerce degree, I was delighted to have the opportunity to ask an expert about the booming industry. Although my knowledge was lim ited, I rattled off questions about the company he worked for, as well as industry logistics, legislation, and future projections for the global market.Pleased to discuss his line of work, the businessman enthusiastically dove into a description of the current state of the industry and provided in-depth answers to all of my questions. After entertaining my friendly interrogation and asking me about my credentials, the businessman revealed he was actually the Managing Director of the company Iรข€™d been quizzing him about. Before parting ways, he handed me a business card, said he liked my enthusiasm, and asked me if Iรข€™d ever considered relocating. The critical follow-upAfter settling into my hostel in Austria, I immediately grabbed my laptop and sent an email thanking the businessman for our interesting conversation. Although I still had a week left of my carefree European vacation, I knew that a prompt, standout follow-up communication was critical if I wanted to further explore thi s opportunity. I informed him of when I was returning to Canada, and suggested we set up a Skype conversation to reconnect shortly after.A few days later, while watching the Austrian Alps blur past the window of the train I was on, I received a reply from the businessman with a list of times that he was available for a Skype meeting. At that moment, for the first time, relocating my life to London started to feel like a tangible opportunity.Determined not to further rely on luck or happenstance, I devoted the rest of my travel time (what else was I going to do on my 9-hour plane ride home anyway?) to further researching the e-commerce industry and the businessman from the planeรข€™s company.Surprise รข€" I actually did itFour months later, I relocated from my quaint hometown, Victoria, Canada, to the bustling European metropolis, London, for an ambitious (and at the time, terrifying) career opportunity with the stranger from the plane. Iรข€™d never lived in a big city (let alone on ano ther continent), had very few personal contacts in London, and had no clue how or where to find an apartment - but for some reason, I found myself throwing my cutest rain gear into my suitcase without hesitation. After stepping off of the plane in London, I was immediately overcome with apprehension and self-doubt. The cautionary warnings Iรข€™d received from anxious friends and family before leaving Canada played on repeat in my mind. Iรข€™d done some impulsive things in my life, but this was crazy- even for me. I took a deep breath, pushed the voices to the back of my mind, and stopped my shaking fingers from calling my best friend in a panic. But how did I end up here?Once I was a bit more settled into my new career, Iรข€™d often find myself staring out of my office window at the enchanting city Iรข€™d grown to call home - perplexed at how this new life of mine had come to be.Having recounted the story of why I moved to London countless times, the ludicrousness of my decision to acce pt the man on the planeรข€™s offer had somewhat lost its luster to me - until a drink with a particularly inquisitive co-worker. I was sharing an after-work pint with a new coworker when she asked me a question that no one else had asked, รข€œHow did you manage to get a job offer on a two-hour plane ride? How could I do that?รข€I realized that Iรข€™d never explored this question with my boss, nor had I taken much time to seriously consider it for myself. So I decided to schedule a meeting with him.The importance of understanding your strengthsDelighted to discuss the topic, my boss tangentially articulated the importance of understanding your personal strengths. He attributed his own successful career progression to the ability to select roles that promoted his strengths and curtailed his weaknesses.Next, he suggested I take The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), ponder the question myself, and schedule a meeting to review my findings. After ruminating on my personality traits, compl eting the MBTI, and reviewing my bossรข€™s cliff notes, I finally had an answer to my co-workerรข€™s question. My interpersonal skills, open-mindedness, and self-confidence were the strengths that lead me to this job.Honing my personal strengthsMy boss cited my robust interpersonal skills as the fundamental reason he offered me a job. Iรข€™d often been congratulated on my strong interpersonal skills, but I couldnรข€™t comprehend the rarity or correlation to success in a workplace.Interpersonal skills are basically your ability to interact with other humans - reflected through both verbal and nonverbal communication. Iรข€™ve always found it easy to form genuine human connections, and didnรข€™t think much about starting a conversation with a stranger on a plane. My boss said heรข€™d been caught off guard by my natural networking skills, palpable enthusiasm, and ability to quickly form an honest connection with a stranger. As a frequent flyer, he assured me that my interpersonal skills set m e apart from the rest of the people on the plane. My decision to move to London to pursue a precarious job offer from a man on a plane was met with both doubt and apprehension by many people in my life. Naturally, I experienced my own dose of trepidation alongside this, but I chose open-mindedness instead of fear. Risks are okay. Mistakes are okay.As a fresh university graduate, moving to London to begin my career in an unknown position and industry required a great deal of self-confidence. I used to think the nerves and apprehension I experienced regarding my move meant that I didnรข€™t have a strong sense of self-confidence. Now, I understand that choosing to move despite my internal self-doubt demonstrates true confidence and self-efficacy.Getting on the plane was the equivalent of investing in my own stock - I believed that I had the ability to influence my own life and handle anything that London might throw at me.This article first appeared on Career Contessa.

Hiring Managers Brain Exposed

Hiring Manager's Brain Exposed Hiring Manager's Brain Exposed Hiring Manager Jillian Zavitz unveils her brain and what she looks for when she reviews a resume. It was succinct, and on target. In short, the teacherรข€™s resume was perfect for a job teaching English as a second language (ESL) online. The resume worked. It caught the attention of Jillian Zavitz, programs manager for TalktoCanada.com, which offers online English learning instruction.Such a revelation is rare for resume writers and readers. Thereรข€™s no transparency when youรข€™re job-hunting. A hiring manager doesnรข€™t take time out of her day to tell us our resumes are too long or our experience irrelevant, or that weรข€™ve presented ourselves suspiciously as the perfect candidate. That lack of transparency stops here. Weรข€™ve persuaded hiring managers to dissect what it is they liked enough about a resume to hire a candidate. Hereรข€™s Zavitz, letting us peer into her hiring process.Short Sweet FocusedFirst off, the cover letter รข€œreally focusedรข€ on exactly what Zavitz was looking for. The opening:The enclosed resume will highlight my achievements in the teaching field as well as showcase my dedication to education. I have a strong academic background in education and applied linguistics. I have recently completed a masterรข€™s degree in Applied Linguistics, specializing in literacy. The cover letter also covered the candidateรข€™s รข€œteaching experience, her future, what her goals are, why she thinks sheรข€™d be a good person for this position,รข€ Zavitz said. รข€œItรข€™s short and sweet and grabs my attention. She has experience abroad, sheรข€™s taught a bunch of levels, she obviously has education behind it and itรข€™s exactly what Iรข€™m looking for.รข€Everything in the resume was also related to education. รข€œPersonally I donรข€™t care if you sweep floors somewhere,รข€ Zavitz said. รข€œI donรข€™t want to read that. Thatรข€™s not important.รข€FlexibleAt the top of the candidateรข€™s one-page resume, Zavitz said she loved the objective in the candidateรข€™s executive su mmary :To obtain a highly responsible part-time or full-time position in the teaching field where proven skills and education can be used to benefit the school in its success.รข€œI love that itรข€™s not demanding,รข€ Zavitz said. รข€œ[Sheรข€™s] not just looking for full time; [sheรข€™s] available part time as well. รข€¦ Sheรข€™s flexible, sheรข€™s dedicated to teaching, wants not only to help students but the school as well. I imagined that sheรข€™d help the school, give us ideas and help us grow with her dedication to the position.รข€BelievableZavitz liked the resume, but just as importantly, she believed it. She said that hiring managers can tell รข€œwhen people are filling it with blah, blah, blah, and just trying to get [our] attention.รข€ Too-good-to-be-true resumes give themselves away by parroting the job listingรข€™s exact requirements. In this case, an unbelievable resume would have included experience in the Middle East (rare), familiarity with the companyรข€™s platform (impossible un less the candidate had worked with the company before) and a preference for working the graveyard shift (unlikely).Specific DatesZavitz also liked the specificity of the candidateรข€™s experience dates, which listed day, month and year. For Zavits, specific dates are a sign of validity that the dates arenรข€™t fictitious. And while acceptable, vague dates like รข€œ2005 ¬-2006รข€ are hard to pinpoint, which personally bothers Zavits who said it can mean anything from two days to two years.Knowing how her industry works, the specific dates allowed Zavitz to interpret something about the candidateรข€™s level of commitment. The candidate taught at a Chinese school for exactly one year, which told Zavitz that she had a one-year contract and then moved on.ReferencesThis candidate listed two references at the bottom of her resume. Professional resume writers donรข€™t typically advise job seekers to put references on their resumes and Zavitz rarely calls the references candidates volunteer - th e รข€œrealรข€ references are the ones they donรข€™t have, not the รข€œgood onesรข€ they list. But in this case, the references were actual people related to past positions. รข€œTheyรข€™re not like [your] momรข€™s best friend,รข€ Zavitz said. รข€œItรข€™s related to the position theyรข€™re applying for.รข€The educator was hired and successfully worked with TalktoCanada for two years. In other words, she was as good as her very good resume.

How to Know if Youre Successful in Your Career - The Muse

How to Know if Youre Successful in Your Career - The Muse How to Know if Youre Successful in Your Career A couple of years ago, I quit my stable corporate job to become a freelance recruiter. I had tons of great reasons for making this move, but ultimately, I wanted more flexibility and less stress. After a few months, Iรข€™d scored some solid clients and was this close to not having to pull money out of savings to pay the bills. Overall, I was feeling pretty good. One of the things I love most about this industry- whether as a freelancer or an in-house employee- is that I get to hang out on sites like LinkedIn all day long. The downside of that, at first, was being constantly bombarded with updates about my connectionsรข€™ fancy new job titles or big promotions. It seemed like all my friends were getting substantial raises, taking incredible trips to foreign countries on the company dime, or scoring major career wins. I was really happy for my friends, but I couldnรข€™t help feeling a little left behind. I even started to question whether Iรข€™d made the right choice. Maybe I shouldรข€™ve stayed the course and kept climbing that corporate ladder. When I finally opened up to a fellow freelancer about my struggles, she reminded me that the very reason Iรข€™d gone out on my own was because I wanted to step away from all the stress, chaos, and pressure thatรข€™s intimately intertwined with those promotions and raises I was envying. Iรข€™d forgotten everything that went into the career milestones everyone around me was achieving. The thing is, success is totally subjective. My version of it revolves around being able to go to a yoga class at 10 AM or working from a park bench on a sunny day. The flexibility that comes with this career path is so important to me that itรข€™s worth the uncertain journey. I know tons of accomplished people who absolutely love the work that they do and are happy to put in long hours at the office, travel for weeks on end, or wake up extra early to squeeze in a jog before an 8 AM call. Being able to juggle a robust schedule while doing fulfilling work is someone elseรข€™s version of success. Itรข€™s different for every one of us. With all of this in mind, if youรข€™re feeling a little down about where you are or asking what it means to be successful I have a few questions for you. And some advice, too. 1. Are You Happy? Do you enjoy the work you do? Or at least most of it? Are you able to find time to hang out with your friends and family or pursue your other interests? If youรข€™re happy, youรข€™re already successful. Liking your job, appreciating your time off, and feeling an overall sense of contentment are huge wins. If you arenรข€™t happy in your job, donรข€™t like your company, or canรข€™t stand your boss, thatรข€™s OK, too. You just have to get a jump start on finding something new. Polish your resume, optimize your LinkedIn profile, and get your networking gameface on. You canรข€"and willรข€"find a better fit. 2. Can You Pay Your Bills? Or at least put a decent meal on the table? This may seem like a low bar, but being a responsible adult who is not only able to pay their bills, but who can afford groceries every week is not nothing. Bonus points if youรข€™re banking a few bucks in your savings account every month. Being able to afford shelter, food, and- hopefully- a little fun is the reason most of us have jobs in the first place. If you can check all three of those boxes, youรข€™re in good shape. It took me years to work my way out of student loan debt and a few lingering credit card bills, and Iรข€™m not ashamed to admit that I subsisted on pickles and crackers (donรข€™t judge) on more than a few occasions. So, if youรข€™re still working toward financial stability, know that you arenรข€™t alone. 3. How Do You Define Success? Ditch the idea of what you think success should look like, and ask yourself what it looks like for you. Do you want to make your own schedule? Help others? Be the go-to person on your team? Thereรข€™s no wrong answer. I canรข€™t stress this point enough. Thereรข€™s so much more to being successful than what an impressive job title or big paycheck indicates. That stuff is all great, but try digging deeper. If youรข€™re dying to land a director-level job, ask yourself why. Are you passionate about managing a team, excited about taking on new challenges, or hoping to land a seat at the decision-makersรข€™ table? If you define success by your salary, ask yourself why you want to make that much. Are you hoping to retire early? Travel the world? Support your family? Whatever your answer is, remember that the definition of success goes far beyond an important title or a six-figure paycheck. Personally, Iรข€™d love to be a rich, world-renowned expert in my field. And maybe I will be one day, but for now, Iรข€™m setting my own hours and making enough to support myself, while earning the trust and respect of my clients. 4. What Can You Do Now That You Couldnรข€™t Have Done a Year Ago? Five Years Ago? In other words, what have you learned? Think about all the things you didnรข€™t have any experience with or werenรข€™t very efficient at when you first started your current job. I bet youรข€™ve accumulated a wealth of knowledge and skills since then. When I first started out in HR, my new boss taught me how to use a super complicated spreadsheet to track company healthcare expenditures. It took me forever to update everything, but I eventually got the hang of it. By the time I left that job, I had to reteach my manager how to use the spreadsheet! This may sound a bit trivial, but itรข€™s still a victory. Dedicating time and energy to getting really good at your job is something to be proud ofรข€"regardless of how big or small the task. Iรข€™ve no doubt that you have stories like this. Write them down. Be proud of them. If you feel like you arenรข€™t learning or growing anymore, there are lots of ways to challenge yourself. Are there any professional certifications youรข€™ve been thinking about pursuing? Are you interested in taking on new responsibilities at your current company? Is it time for a complete career pivot? Spend some time thinking about what you want to learn next, then go after it. 5. What Are You Most Proud of? Write down everything youรข€™ve accomplished throughout your educational and professional career. And include your personal life, too, while youรข€™re at it. This could be anythingรข€"the semester you earned a 4.0 GPA, that time you pulled off a last-minute presentation, or the day you finally stuck a solid handstand in yoga class. Taking inventory of your accomplishments from a holistic viewpoint can help to put your actual level of success in perspective. We tend to focus on our failures, so keep your list of wins as a reminder of how much youรข€™ve achieved. Look back on your triumphs when youรข€™re feeling down and focus on how far youรข€™ve come instead of worrying about the things youรข€™ve yet to achieve. 6. Are You Working Toward Something? What are your career goals? What do you want your life to look like? What type of person do you want to be? Now ask yourself if your current job or career path is going to help you get where you want to go. If the answer is yes, youรข€™re more successful than you think. If you feel like youรข€™ve gotten off track, thatรข€™s totally fine (and normalรข€"Iรข€™ve made a few career missteps myself). Recognizing that itรข€™s time to make a change is the first step. Defining your goals comes next. Then youรข€™ll need to make a plan. And just like that, youรข€™re working toward something again. Questioning your career path or feeling insecure about your success is totally normal, but comparing your progress or achievements to someone elseรข€™s isnรข€™t going to do you any good. When in doubt, remind yourself of what your version of success looks like and keep working toward it. Youรข€™ll get there eventuallyรข€"and I know youรข€™ll have a lot of wins along the way.
